Can A Sulfate-Free And Paraben-Free Shampoo And Conditioner Help My Hair?
Author: Tim Faber
As a hair products manufacturer and distributor, we get daily calls asking what can be done about hair damage - that appears to be increasing over the past decade. The answer lies in understanding why damage, thinning or possibly hair loss are occurring.
What's the issue? Why the damage?
Many dermatologists, trichologists, and stylists suggest the use of harmful shampoos and conditioners have played a vital role towards increasing damage...and color loss.
As a result sulfate-free shampoo and conditioners have become very popular. Developed without the use of sodium lauryl sulfate or paraben-based preservatives, the "non sulfate" products are excellent for sensitive scalps, those prone to oiliness or dandruff symptoms, and for those susceptible to damage.
Research has shown SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) can be a major contributor towards:
- Loss of hydration and moisture
- Stripping of natural oils and protectants
- Accelerated fading of color
- Irritation and inflammation of the scalp
What are surfactants?
SLS and the parabens used as preservatives are common in many less-expensive shampoos and conditioners. Their low cost make them widely used by many store bought brands and sub-brands of well-known salon products.
As a surfactant, sulfates help create the "bubbles" and foaming action. This helps dislodge dirt, oil, grease and contaminants. The problem is many of the chemicals are harsh and can damage or harm follicles and the scalp - contributing to common scalp problems such as seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, scalp eczema, flakes and itchiness.
How non-sulfate surfactants and natural preservatives help
Researchers and formulators have found many alternatives to harsh chemicals. Botanical extracts, derivatives, and natural oils have all played a part in producing natural products that are equally (if not more) effective without harming the hair.
For those with sensitive scalps or for those with color treatments or damage, this is good news! And the best news is sulfate free shampoo and conditioner combos offer the best of both worlds - excellent, safe cleansing and protective conditioning treatment.
Sulfate free products have been shown to:
- Extend color life
- Reduce or eliminate scalp irritation and inflammation
- Reduce occurrence of common scalp problems - psoriasis, dandruff, dermatitis
- Improve volume, body and control
- Improve shine and brilliance
And what I think may be the most important to the consumer...is that many sulfate-laden products just didn't perform well - that has changed. The newest products provide as much foaming and cleansing action as sulfate-based products, plus show substantial improvement in hydration, moisture retention, damage control and repair, and manageability.
If you have color treated hair, have had chronic problems with damage and splitting, or if you have or have had unexplained scalp problems, we recommend the use of a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner for 2-3 weeks. Most are developed for daily use, and you just might find your "favorite shampoo" is the best for your hair and scalp.
